My name is James Ethridge, although most people call me Jimbo. I’m the owner and creator behind Straight Shooter Camouflage Systems.
When people visit the SSCS website, they may assume there is a company staff working behind it. There isn’t. SSCS is entirely operated by me. I design the camouflage patterns, decide which products they belong on, operate the Shopify store, create the marketing, manage the product listings and make the final decisions about everything associated with the brand.
I also work a full-time job in the trucking industry. I’ve spent nearly four decades in that industry, so SSCS is built during the hours I can carve out before work, after work and on weekends. I’m not telling people that as an excuse or asking for sympathy. I simply want customers to understand who and what they are supporting. There isn’t a corporate marketing department behind SSCS. There is one working man trying to build something of his own.
I didn’t start SSCS just to open another online store. After nearly four decades in the trucking industry, I built it with a deeply personal goal: to create a path out of trucking and pursue camouflage design full time. I want SSCS to become the business that retires me from the industry—not so I can stop working, but so I can finally devote my time to the work I truly care about: creating original patterns, developing better camouflage, hunting, testing new ideas and growing this brand. Every pattern I create and every product I release is another step toward that freedom.
I have hunted for most of my life. I’ve spent countless hours sitting in stands, walking through different kinds of terrain and studying the way trees, brush, shadows, leaves, rocks and broken ground actually look. That experience is the foundation of SSCS.
The basic idea behind my camouflage is simple: SSCS Camouflage is designed around what the woods actually look like.
A lot of camouflage looks like somebody’s idea of camouflage. I want my patterns to reflect real environments and the natural breakup that actually exists in the woods. Different terrain calls for different colors, shapes, depth and structure, which is why SSCS offers more than one kind of pattern. I don’t believe one camouflage design is perfect for every environment.
That is also why SSCS has so many patterns—and why many more are on the way. The woods do not look the same everywhere, so camouflage should not all look the same either. I have built a vault full of killer camouflage patterns created for different environments, seasons and styles, and I believe they are too good to sit unseen on a computer. I want to share them with the world—put them in the field, put them on clothing and give people original choices beyond the same familiar camouflage they have seen for years.
I openly use artificial intelligence as part of my creative and business process. I’m not trying to hide that or pretend otherwise. AI helps me bring ideas to life, explore variations, create visual content, organize information and accomplish work that would normally require an entire staff.
But AI is a tool. It doesn’t have a lifetime of hunting experience. It hasn’t sat in the woods studying how everything fits together. It doesn’t choose the final patterns, decide what works, select the products or operate the business. I do. Every final decision carries my judgment, my experience and my name.
Although SSCS begins with a functional camouflage foundation, I don’t believe camouflage has to be limited to hunting season. Some of these patterns naturally cross into outdoor lifestyle clothing and streetwear.
I wear SSCS clothing regularly because I genuinely like the patterns. I don’t only put them on when I go hunting. I wear them as everyday clothing because I think they look badass. If camouflage is designed well, it can serve a real purpose in the field while still being something a person is proud to wear anywhere else.
That crossover is part of what makes SSCS different. Some customers may choose a pattern because it matches the terrain they hunt. Someone else may choose that same pattern simply because they love how it looks on a jacket, shirt, hoodie or hat. Both reasons are legitimate.
I’m still building SSCS, still learning and still working to make it better. This isn’t a finished corporate machine with unlimited money and manpower. It is an independent brand being built honestly, one decision and one product at a time.
What customers see on the website is the result of one person’s hunting experience, creativity, persistence and belief that camouflage can be both functional and genuinely good-looking.
